Popeye Village – (Ref: pfm130169)
Stunning and contrasting colors of the waters and the painted wooden huts of Popeye Village in Mellieha. Popeye Village, also known as Sweethaven Village, is a group of rustic and ramshackle wooden buildings located at Anchor Bay in the north-west corner of the Mediterranean island of Malta, two miles from the village of Mellieħa. This time of year it is only appropriate to post a panoramic image celebrating the feast of St.Mary. A number of towns in Malta and Gozo celebrate this feast (7 I believe) but this photo hails from the town of Mosta. The parish church of Mosta (known as the Rotunda of St Marija Assunta) can be seen in the foreground centre and is the third largest unsupported dome in the World. The Rotunda, designed by George Grognet de Vasse, a French citizen resident in Mosta, took 27 years to complete. On April 9, 1942, during an afternoon air-raid, a 200 kg Luftwaffe bomb pierced the dome...

This panoramic shot of Ghajn Tuffieha Bay and the derelict Riviera Martinique Hotel during a wintry afternoon gives a very different perspective of the beautiful golden and sandy bay which we enjoy during Summer time. Ghajn Tuffieha is generally translated to “The Apple’s Eye”, however (and I stand to go against general perception here) as a small kid I remember getting my hands on a very old book of fables which contained a short story of fairies living on the small island of Malta in a place where a magical apple tree grew right in the middle of a spring of water. In...

San Dimitri Chapel, full of myth and legend is built on a promontory just outside the village of Għarb close to a cliff called Ras San Mitri (The Cape of St. Demetrius). Approached by a country road from Għarb, the chapel stands in a delightful spot and is Gozo’s westernmost chapel. An early fifteenth century chapel was rebuilt in 1736 to create the building we see today. The altarpiece above the stone altar shows St. Demetrius on horseback with an old woman praying and a young man in chains. This relates to one of several legends about the chapel. This legend – a...

A wide panoramic image of the popular Balluta Bay in St.Julian’s with the Neo-Gothic Church and Balluta Buildings towards the right of the image and contrasting recently built structures on the left. Balluta Bay Balluta Bay is a bay on the northeast coast of Malta within St. Julian’s. It is a popular recreation spot used for swimming, diving, and water sports, with a triangular pjazza surrounded by cafés and shaded by Judas trees.
